I sometimes stumble upon things that completely derail my original plan. That’s exactly what happened with this novel. What began as a simple search for information about the ancient Mali Empire led me to a strange ritual said to predate even the earliest Egyptian dynasties. Could that really be true? 

and the plot veered off course once again. The deeper I dug, the more unbelievable the findings became. Yet something felt off. Three well‑known ethnologists interpreted the material very differently, and some of the rituals described in the texts were disturbing and long forbidden. I began to doubt whether this topic belonged in a story about adventurous scientists exploring Africa’s indigenous secrets. 

I was close to abandoning everything. Then I found a scholar at the University of Bamako — a stroke of luck. He had access to barely legible originals from the second century BCE. Not only were they ancient, they were sensational. And they confirmed one of the German translations I already knew. But the original also contained something far more unsettling. I won’t spoil it here. 

For many ethnologists, these traditions belong to the realm of mythology — dismissed as cult or superstition. But there are scholars, like my professor in Mali, who see much more in them. Due to the difficult political situation in Mali, some names and locations in the book have been changed.
